Boomtown Wins Seventh IFT
HANCOCK—Lansing’s Boomtown Saints defeated defending champion Squad (Appleton, WI) in two straight games to win the 63rd Coca-Cola International Frisbee Tournament. Boomtown’s Ryan Scott won the Healy Family MVP Award. Boomtown was able to drink from the Julius T. Nachazel Cup, continuing the longest standing tradition in disc sports.
Local favorites the Shottle Bop finished third and Marquette’s Wolfpack took fourth place. Twelve teams and fans enjoyed sunny skies and hot temperatures both days.
The late Dave Bolyard was awarded the newly renamed Jon Davis/Dan Thornton Spirit of Guts Award for “exemplary sportsmanship, quality of play, and, most importantly, having fun.” The award was renamed this year to honor the 50th consecutive IFT played by Dan Thornton of Livonia, formerly of Hancock.
Next up on the Guts Frisbee circuit is the US Nationals in Marquette, August 7 and 8; and the World’s in Detroit, September 4 and 5.
Guts Frisbee is played by two teams 14 meters apart hurling the orange Professional Model Frisbee disc at speeds up to 90 MPH. The disc must be caught by one hand, and the games go to 21 points and must be won by two points.
Shottle Bop Wins USA Guts World’s Championshipb
DETROIT—The Keweenaw’s Shottle Bop won the 2021 USA Guts World’s Championship in Detroit with a stunning comeback in the final game. Down 14-8, Shottle Bop rallied back to defeat Lansing’s Boomtown Saints 21-19 in game three and bring the championship to the Upper Peninsula.
Shottle Bop advanced to the finals by defeating Marquette’s Wolf Pack two games to none in the winner’s bracket finals. Boomtown defeated Wolf Pack in the loser’s bracket finals. The Worms took fourth and the Keweenaw’s Monte Carlo took fifth.
Fourteen teams competed at the World’s, and it is the first time a Keweenaw team won the event since the inaugural World’s in Toronto in 1978, won by the Library Bar. Members of the Shottle Bop were Will Blau, Carter Nettell, Kyle Saatio and Luke Rautio (Hancock), Stephen Dudenas (Lake Linden), Luke Lahtinen (Marquette) and Scott Brooks (L’Anse).
The World’s marks the end of the major Guts Frisbee season, with the highest number of young players and teams across all the major tournaments (Wisconsin State Championship, International Frisbee Tournament, US Nationals, and World’s Championship) in several seasons.
